Zhao Bandi (Chinese, b. 1966) is a contemporary artist often nicknamed “the panda man” due to the recurring presence of pandas throughout his practice. Working across painting, sculpture, installation, photography and performance, Zhao uses the panda—one of China’s most recognisable national symbols—as a central figure through which he explores contemporary society, media culture and political imagery.
Through humorous, ironic and sometimes theatrical compositions, Zhao blends elements of art, advertising and propaganda to address issues such as pollution, violence, consumerism and social behaviour. His works frequently feature staged interactions with a plush panda character, using text and visual satire to reflect on culture, identity and the relationship between the individual and society.
