Eric Chan

Eric Chan (b. 1975) is a Malaysian contemporary painter whose work explores the relationship between painting and photography. He holds a Master’s degree in Fine Art (Painting) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, in partnership with LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Influenced by photographic aesthetics, Chan uses effects such as blurring, smearing and tonal inversion to create atmospheric compositions that evoke the appearance of film negatives. These techniques shape his explorations of time, memory and perception. Chan received the Jurors’ Choice award at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards in 2002 and a Highly Commended accolade at the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2003. His work is held by the Singapore Art Museum and in collections including those of CapitaLand, UOB, UBS, OCBC and Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
