Goh Beng Kwan

Goh Beng Kwan (born 1937) is an Indonesian-born Singaporean modern artist whose work helped establish abstraction and mixed media in Singapore art. From 1961 to 1965, he studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he encountered the influence of abstract expressionism. He became known for his use of collage and non-traditional materials, developing an approach associated with themes of identity and cultural hybridity.

In 1989, Goh received Singapore’s Cultural Medallion, becoming one of the first abstract artists to be honoured with the award. The recognition acknowledged his role in expanding the scope of visual art in Singapore. Across his practice, collage and mixed media have remained central to the way he explores form and material, reflecting the possibilities he helped open for abstraction in the country.
