Alfi Jumaldi (Indonesian, b. 1973) is an Indonesian contemporary painter known for his expressive and conceptually layered works. He studied at the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) in Yogyakarta and later became a founding member of the influential Jendela Art Group, a collective that played an important role in shaping contemporary Indonesian art in the late 1990s.
Alfi’s paintings are characterised by gestural marks, scribbles and symbolic imagery layered over landscapes or fragmented spaces. His works often explore memory, history and cultural identity, combining abstract elements with recognisable motifs to create compositions that feel both personal and reflective. Through these layered surfaces and intuitive mark-making, Alfi invites viewers to engage with his works on an emotional and instinctive level rather than through a fixed narrative.
He has exhibited widely in Indonesia and internationally, with works shown in museums, galleries and art fairs across Asia and Europe. Jumaldi Alfi currently lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and remains an active figure in the country’s contemporary art scene.
