Quek Kiat Sing

Quek Kiat Sing (b. 1972) is a Singaporean artist who brings modern-day subjects into dialogue with traditional Chinese ink painting. Her work explores the continuing relevance of Asian culture in contemporary life, often finding humour in familiar scenes. She has received numerous awards and created Everyday Singapore 每日所见, a permanent site-specific commission at Shenton Way MRT Station. The work depicts scenes from the surrounding area in her contemporary ink style. Quek’s interest in the everyday extends beyond Singapore: during a trip to London in 2007, she made an ink painting of St Paul’s Cathedral that attends to the buildings, autumn trees and activity of the street. Across these subjects, she uses the expressive possibilities of ink to observe places and the lives unfolding within them.
